FREEDOM
Happy Independence Day everybody. Last night I went to the Bedlam theatre with my sister and watched a play and then we went up to the roof and watched fireworks on their rooftop deck with a bunch of other people. There were some college kids who were anti patriots walking around with a bad drawing of the queen of England. They were asking people to kiss the queen. The idea was that anyone who kissed the queen was giving up their freedom and giving it back to the queen. I didn't understand why they were doing this on the fourth of July. I didn't understand why they were doing this at all. First of all; it was not this queen who tried to take our freedom from us. It was England's king some two hundred and thirty years ago who sent an army to America when it's founders declared their independence from England. If these kids wanted to give their freedom back; he's the one they should give it back to. I made the mistake of asking them why they were doing this. That got me into a debate that went over their heads. One of them made the argument that freedom isn't free. Of course freedom isn't free. If they would've read their history books they would have seen that freedom always has a price. They also would have seen that two hundred and thirty something years ago a bunch of people died in a war just so these kids would have the right to sit on a rooftop deck on a day that we celebrate our independence and express their anti-patriotism. In most countries they would have put in prison just for that. I did not get to say any of this to them. Like I said this debate went over their heads. They got annoyed and told me to go away. I still didn't understand why they would give up their rights, civil liberties, and freedom. Before I could finish that statement one of the girls rudely interrupted me and said "well we only want people around us who understand us." The last thing I said before I walked away was "well then you're all just jacking each other off."
